The Ministry of Justice announced a review of the scope of the sharing of personal information and the protections that apply when personal information is shared in the public and private sectors. This follows the loss by HM Revenue and Customs of a CD containing 25 million child benefit records. It will consider possible changes to the way the Data Protection Act 1998 operates in the UK and the options for implementing any changes.

The report will include recommendations on the powers and sanctions available to the Information Commissioner and courts. It will also make recommendations on how data-sharing policy should be developed to ensure proper transparency, scrutiny and accountability.
