The Information Commissioner has issued a statement on HMRC's loss of 25 million confidential child benefit records. The Commissioner confirmed that the ICO is already investigating two other breaches of security by HMRC. The government has announcement an independent review into the matter. When the review's report is received, the ICO will decide whether further action should be taken.

The ICO has been calling for increased powers to ensure compliance with data protection law. Following this latest breach, the government has confirmed that the Commissioner will be given power to spot-check government departments to ensure that data is safe.
