The ICO launched its new CCTV code of practice replacing one first issued in 2000. The guidance is targeted at helping organisations who use CCTV to comply with the Data Protection Act 1998 and to help them inspire public confidence that they are using CCTV responsibly.

The code outlines the key issues which organisations must consider when routinely capturing images of individuals on their CCTV equipment. It restricts the use of CCTV for recording conversations in audio. It also provides guidance on the retention of CCTV images, as well as on their disclosure to law enforcement agencies for the purposes of crime investigation.
