The ICO has launched its strategy paper setting out how it will promote good industry practice and minimise data protection risk at the Data Protection Officer Conference in Manchester. The ICO indicates that, due to its limited resources, it will prioritise the prevention of data protection risk over the enforcement of compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998.

This includes seeking increased involvement in policy-making and education about data protection obligations. Therefore the ICO will seek to cooperate with other regulators, the legislature, the media and commercial and civic organisations. It also expects to publish further guidance on applying the strategy in the future.
