The ICO has ordered the East Riding of Yorkshire Council to release details of its waste management contract with Waste Recycling Groups. The Council had refused to release it on the grounds that it was subject to commercial confidentiality and would be detrimental to the Council and WRG. The ICO ruled that it was in the public interest for this to be released, as the details of how waste is managed might have an important impact on the community.

The information released includes details of waste emissions, planning and development information, prices and operational information. The ICO did state that the decision to release pricing information here did not mean that it would do so in all cases. This impacts on private businesses considering contracting with a public body, as the information in the agreement could be made public.
