Freedom of information requests

The ICO has issued a formal practice recommendation (issued when the practice of a public authority does not conform with codes of practice) to the Department for Health stating that it must take steps to improve its handling of requests made under the Freedom of Information Act. This follows the repeated failure by the DfH to respond promptly and adequately to requests.

The ICO has recommended a review of staffing and resource levels for handling requests. The ICO hopes that the practice recommendation will encourage the DfH to improve its systems rapidly. The ICO could issue an Enforcement Notice if matters do not improve.
