DEFRA has published a guidance booklet with hints for public authorities on how to handle requests for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) and the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 (EIR). The booklet gives an overview of the actions which public authorities have to take in response to requests for information and the factors that public authorities must consider.

The booklet includes a summary of the exemptions which apply under the FOIA and the EIR, hints on the practical application of the rules and checklists on the public authority's response process and key principles for authorities when considering information requests.
