Burges Salmon has advised the shareholders of Somerset-based beef and lamb processor RWM Food Group on its sale to ABP Food Group for an undisclosed sum. RWM, owned and managed by the Heffer family for more than 40 years, is made up of a number of companies including the contract calf and cattle rearing business Blade Farming, plus Southern Counties Fresh Foods. It has processing factories in Langport in Somerset and Yetminster in Dorset, which includes a retail packing operation.

Graham Heffer said: “The sale of RWM was taken after much consideration by the family who had invested 40 years into growing and developing the business that prides itself on quality and customer service. I am sure ABP UK will embrace the RWM ethos and help the business develop even further. I would like to thank our staff, customers, suppliers and farmers for their dedication and loyalty on behalf of the entire family.”

Tom Kirwan, managing director of ABP UK, said: "This is an important milestone in the development of ABP UK, augmenting its beef supply in the cattle rich South West region of England and giving the business a platform in lamb to further develop its existing lamb processing activity in Northern Ireland."

Burges Salmon provided corporate, tax and other specialist expertise throughout the process.  The deal was led by corporate partner Camilla Usher-Clark, assisted by tax partner Nigel Popplewell and corporate lawyers Tim Roberts and Gill Saunderson.
