Martin came to Burges Salmon from Macfarlanes in 1981 and was made partner in 1983. Martin retired as a partner in 2009 and now works with the firm on a consultancy basis specialising in the following practice areas:

Martin specialises in trusts, probate and capital tax planning, particularly for private clients with agricultural, business and non-resident interests. Many of his clients have landed estates. He also deals with Probate and the administration of large estates and advises trustees, executors and beneficiaries on contentious matters relating to trusts and Probate.
- Over the past year he has been heavily involved in advising a large number of private clients on restructuring family trusts following the Inheritance Tax changes to trusts introduced in the Finance Act 2006.
- He is currently advising the executors on the administration of a substantial estate with a large agricultural enterprise and property portfolio and heritage assets.
- He is also currently advising the executors of an estate in connection with a substantial claim against the estate under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975.
- Recently he has been advising clients on restructuring asset holdings in the light of recent changes to Capital Gains Tax.
