Burges Salmon wins 'Best Tax Team' award
27 May 2011
Teamwork, innovation and service excellence were all major factors in Burges Salmon being named the UK’s Best Tax Team in a Law Firm at the annual Taxation Awards last night [26.05.11].
The winning team, lead by Partners Nigel Popplewell and John Barnett, was singled out for its "innovative use of technology which allowed them to solve the problems that other advisers could not," according to the judging panel.
Among the examples given was the creation of proprietary client calculators and elsewhere the development of bespoke online training modules for a major banking client, following radical regulatory tax changes affecting UK resident non-domiciles.
Nigel Popplewell says: “It is our wide-ranging, eclectic client base and the quality of our work that makes our tax practice stand out from those of other law firms. Naturally we are thrilled to have the calibre of our work recognised at the Taxation Awards, which are a gold standard of excellence within the tax sector.”
The Firm’s core tax practice consists of six partners and 17 lawyers, with many recognised as leading individuals in their field. The team advises on tax planning, investigations and disputes, and handles compliance matters too on all taxes including capital gains tax, corporation tax, income tax, inheritance tax, national insurance contributions, stamp duty land tax and value added tax.
“As well as delivering award-winning tax solutions to both national and international clients, we are staying ahead of the curve by developing in-house capabilities to respond to future needs too,” adds Nigel. “For example, we expect alternative methods of dispute resolution such as mediation to gain added importance in the UK as the HMRC progresses through its review of litigation settlement strategy. A member of our team is therefore currently undertaking training in mediation to extend our client services further still.”
