Having trained with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in London, and having spent three years with DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary's Commercial and Projects team in Birmingham, Al joined Burges Salmon in September 2006.
Al's background includes a broad base of general commercial work for a wide range of corporate and public sector clients, as well as delivering more specialised advice for public sector, financial and private sector clients on numerous PFI, PPP and other major projects (in the leisure, transport and defence sectors in particular).
Al's experience includes:
- A 6 month secondment to the MoD’s Commercial Law Team, during which he advised on numerous MoD projects, both operational and in procurement, including a sole-source 10 year Submarine Engineering Support Contract and the Defence Information Training Management competitive dialogue.
- Acting for Avon and Somerset Police Authority, Somerset County Council and Taunton Deane Borough Council in procurement of a private sector partner to deliver certain back-office and support functions via an innovative shared service partnership structure.
- Delivering drafting and advice to MoD on its ongoing Standard Contract Template Project, aimed at rationalising and harmonising the standard contractual drafting and guidance for a wide range of MoD acquisition contracts, and involving both UK and international contracting.
- Assisting the MoD with drafting and negotiations on its ATTAC Project, a partnering arrangement for support services (entailing elements of outsourcing) in respect of Tornado aircraft, provided by BAE Systems.
- Playing a lead role in the team advising Birmingham City Council on the procurement and development of its £2.2 billion innovative Highways PFI (which will be used as the standard form for all future similar deals).
