Publication by Defra in November of its paper ‘Developing an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) Framework’, which builds on the Implementation Plan published in March 2010, has underlined the Government’s continued support for AD.

The paper aims to provide a starting point for collaboration between government, industry and a wide range of interested parties on a programme of work which will be delivered in partnership. This work aims to place AD in the context of the wider spectrum of waste management technologies and to map out the key work areas the Government believes must be addressed to deliver a substantial increase in energy from waste through AD in the UK.

A steering group, chaired by Government, will be formed and will involve all those government departments that have an interest in the development of the AD industry. It will also have nominated representatives from industry, communities, local government, regulators and other sectors.

The plan is to then agree and publish a joint industry and Government AD framework in spring 2011. This will form the basis of government action in respect of AD.
