You have got through the assessment centre and now you have the opportunity to sample the cultural delights that a vacation scheme can offer. Just like any vacation, some places take your breath away, while others leave you checking for earlier flights...

Stepping off the plane

The first day of a vacation scheme can feel like exiting an aircraft and being hit by the alien heat and humidity. It is a whirlwind of training, meeting new people and nervous excitement.

Fortunately, once you have acclimatised to the conditions, it becomes an enjoyable opportunity. A vacation scheme allows you to experience life as a trainee solicitor, as well as a firm’s culture and history.

A vacation at Burges Salmon

During the two-week vacation scheme at Burges Salmon your time will be split between two destinations that you can choose beforehand. You will be assigned a supervisor, as well as a vacation scheme buddy who will act as your tour guide.

Once at the firm, you’ll complete a series of tasks that are designed to help you demonstrate your abilities and prepare for your training contract interview. You’ll also gain a greater understanding of the legal profession.

Holiday entertainment

But it’s not all work. Your tour guides are like your resort entertainers. They organise social activities to help you relax, see the sights and get to know the other intrepid vacation schemers. During my vacation scheme, we were treated to a murder mystery evening, a wine tasting soirée, bowling and exotic tapas and a BBQ and quiz night.

Now, as a Burges Salmon trainee, I am part of the vacation scheme social committee. Getting to meet a group of new people and show them the best parts of Bristol is a great experience. This year the vacation schemers indulged in a boat ride along the river Avon and got locked in a puzzle room with a mad scientist!

Edinburgh to Florida

It is important to remember that experiences in different firms can vary as much as a weekend break to Edinburgh differs from a two week trip to Florida.

Therefore, before signing up for a two year training contract, completing a vacation scheme might be the wisest holiday you've ever taken!
