Felicity Lowless Solicitor – Private Client

Overview

I joined Burges Salmon’s private client team in 2013 as a solicitor with one year’s PQE.

As an A Level student, I set my heart on studying at the University of Bristol. I was drawn to the vibrancy of the city and its enviable location in the South West. I haven’t looked back since. I completed an undergraduate degree in English Literature and remained in Bristol to complete the GDL and LPC. I qualified with a national law firm, based in its Bristol office, before spending a year with a niche firm in the Cotswolds.

A number of my university friends went to London on graduating. However, whilst I enjoy spending time in the City, I knew being based there permanently wasn’t for me. Burges Salmon is one of the UK’s leading law firms and, with the firm offering top quality work, I cannot see any reason to compromise on the lifestyle Bristol has to offer.

Our team advises on a wide range of specialisms, including international wealth and trust structuring, tax and estate planning, and landed estates. On joining, I was conscious my background in UK tax and trusts would only get me so far and the prospect of filling the requisite gaps in my knowledge seemed like a somewhat daunting task. However, I needn’t have worried. Our department has a wealth of training opportunities each week in various forms including webinars, discussion groups, inter-departmental presentations, journal reviews and other knowledge sharing opportunities.

It also helped that I felt part of the team very quickly. We have an open door policy and colleagues are always happy to provide support and guidance when necessary. I have found the firm to be very friendly and there are plenty of occasions to integrate outside your immediate team. For example, there is a monthly staff social as well as various firm-wide activities to get involved in such as running, softball, hockey or yoga (to mention but a few). We also have a social club which offers a host of different events from theatre trips to cup cake decorating classes!
