Richard Adams Senior Associate – Construction and Engineering

Overview

I joined Burges Salmon in 2006 as a paralegal, having studied Law at the University of Bristol and subsequently working for 18 months at a contract claims consultancy firm. I soon became a paralegal team leader and completed the part-time LPC. I started my training contract in 2009 and qualified into the construction and engineering team in April 2011.

The construction and engineering team gets involved in a variety of projects from commercial developments throughout the UK to renewables, heritage and infrastructure projects. I also have the opportunity to do contentious and non-contentious work so I can experience project transactions and disputes within the same department. construction and engineering law can be very technical, so you are always learning. It is also unique in that it involves the physical application of the law to the built environment around you – everywhere you look there is a construction project of some type.

Since my university days, I have loved everything Bristol has to offer. Coming from Northern Ireland, I was never tempted to go back or to be swallowed by the London rat-race. Bristol is a perfect balance between the two. While I enjoy working in London – which I do frequently from our London office – it is always good to get back to Bristol. It is such a green and manageable city with gems such as the harbourside and Clifton Village, creating the perfect atmosphere for after-work drinks or a relaxing weekend stroll.

Once you move to Bristol it is very difficult to leave as it is such a great place to live and work. A real plus is being able to walk to work while still being close to great transport links including Temple Meads for trains across the country and Bristol Airport (so I can visit my parents back home). With the countryside and the coast on your doorstep you really forget you are in a big city sometimes.

Work-life balance is very important to me – Burges Salmon provides the high quality work and Bristol is the perfect setting.
