Burges Salmon has appointed real estate Partner Philip Beer from City of London firm Simmons & Simmons. Philip joined on 14 March to further strengthen the expanding 65 lawyer real estate practice, recently awarded Property Team of the Year at the British Legal Awards.

Philip has an extensive track record in the energy, infrastructure, investment funds and rail sectors and on joining will head the real estate team handling rail property matters including operations and infrastructure projects access and regulation, franchising and operational issues. He brings prior rail experience from projects undertaken at both Simmons & Simmons and, before that, Herbert Smith.

The appointment further bolsters Burges Salmon’s nationally acclaimed specialist Rail Group, believed to be the largest of its type in the UK. The Group has played a leading role in advising the UK rail industry since its privatisation. Today the Group’s expertise spans the broad spectrum of the industry's needs – whether franchised, freight or open access operator; conventional or high speed network; government or industry body; operator, manufacturer, developer, or financier.

Examples of Philip’s rail experience include:

  • property issues on franchise re-mapping and franchise transfer arrangements
  • regeneration of the former railway lands surrounding St Pancras Station including coordinating regeneration of the former railway lands by LCR and its development partners with Network Rail's major upgrade of King's Cross Station
  • development agreement issues on the design, construction and operation of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (High Speed 1)
  • lease arrangements for the 68 mile long route of High Speed 1 from St Pancras International Station to the Channel Tunnel portal advising on its plans for a proposed redevelopment of Watford Junction station

Head of Real Estate at Burges Salmon, Richard Clark commented: “We are delighted that Philip has joined us. Despite the continuing challenging market conditions the Real Estate team is going from strength to strength, endorsed by the recent national recognition we have enjoyed at the British Legal Awards and the Legal Business Awards. Philip adds further depth to our already extensive expertise in a number of key sectors".
