We are committed to reducing the impact of our activities on the environment and recognise that our carbon footprint results mainly from the following activities:

  • Procurement and use of manufactured and natural resources at our offices (such as paper and electricity).
  • Waste generation from our offices.
  • Energy use through travel.

Our environmental policy

Our environmental policy details how we aim to achieve our commitment. We are proud that in 2013 we gained certification of our Environmental Management System to the international standard ISO 14001.

As founding members of the Legal Sustainability Alliance we measure, reduce and publish our carbon footprint and collaborate with other firms to tackle climate change on a wider scale.

“As a founder member of the Legal Sustainability Alliance we need to be continually improving our environmental performance. Certification to the ISO 14001 environmental standard will not only do that and keep us at the forefront of our competitors but will also help our legal offering to clients seeking environmental advice."
Michael Barlow (head of our Environmental law team and chair of the Burges Salmon Environment Committee)

Our offices

Our principal office, One Glass Wharf, is one of central Bristol's most eco-friendly buildings thanks to the Carbon Trust, which advised us on environmental performance during the design development phase of the project. As a result, One Glass Wharf was awarded a BREEAM Excellent rating for its energy consumption. Our premises incorporate some of the most environmentally-friendly technologies and approaches available including:

  • air conditioning with remote energy saving sensors
  • building with environmentally-friendly materials
  • cooling using harbour water
  • energy efficient heating
  • increased fresh air ventilation
  • maximising daylight
  • rainwater recycling
  • recycling facilities.

Our London office also features a number of environmentally-friendly features and has been awarded a BREEAM Very Good rating.

Our people

We engage with our people through our BSustainable Committee – our carbon champions – and encourage colleagues from across the firm to adopt more sustainable working practices and greener travel options through initiatives such as our "Green Week". This is run every June to coincide with Bristol's Big Green Week.

In 2014, we won the West of England Carbon Challenge award for Best Large Enterprise. We were praised in particular for the staff engagement initiatives that we had implemented, our ISO 14001 certification and the fact that we continually monitor the use of our building from an environmental perspective. This is a collaboration between more than 100 businesses and public sector organizations which are committed to reducing their energy use and carbon footprint.
