Overview

When I left school I undertook a secretarial course where, among many things, I learned to touch type on a manual typewriter and to take shorthand which is a dying art these days! Prior to taking time off to have a family, I worked as a regional office manager covering offices in Bristol, Exeter and Plymouth. Upon returning to work part-time to fit around my family commitments, I worked as a PA on a job share basis and subsequently in the family law team at another Bristol law firm.

When my children were older, I felt it was time for me to take on a new challenge and return to full-time work which is when I applied to Burges Salmon and secured the position of PA to the senior partner in February 2006. Since joining Burges Salmon I have held several PA roles in various legal departments across the firm working for partners who had management responsibilities as well as their law practice. In February 2015 I moved out of the legal departments to work for the chief people officer and his team in human resources.  There are always opportunities at Burges Salmon to apply for vacancies that arise which allows employees to gain promotion or change direction.

My current role primarily involves managing several busy diaries, arranging meetings, taking minutes (using my shorthand skills), producing documents, presentations and diagrams and generally supporting the team in their roles.

Additionally, I am part of the management PA team which is a team of five, supporting the senior management in the firm. We all cross cover during absence or if additional resource is required. This gives me the benefit of being part of two teams which provides me with variety and I can honestly say that no two days are ever the same.

Since starting my new role in HR, I have become actively involved in organising many social events including the bi-annual retired personnel lunches, the firm wide summer party, departmental Christmas party and the regular staff socials which take place every other month on a Friday after work where drinks and nibbles are provided. This enables the whole firm to get together socially. You may think that this sounds like a great place to work and you would be correct in that assumption – hard work and commitment are certainly expected but there is plenty of fun to be had as well.

I have got involved with the charity of the year event that the firm supports every other year with a strictly legal event. This involved volunteers from across the firm, including partners dancing in front of a huge audience and a panel of judges to raise money for the charity. I was also part of a group of ladies who produced a belly dancing routine – that was something that I had never done before and I was absolutely terrified but I have to say that it was hugely rewarding and gave me the opportunity to make new friends. After the event I was so glad that I agreed to take part!
