Overview

I studied Economics at Durham University because I had always enjoyed maths and political discussions at school. Economics combined these interests and I felt it would allow me to consider a wide range of careers.

After graduating with a 2:1, I found that many of my peers entered the civil service or accountancy practice which was not for me. I thought HR would combine my interests and skills and upon entering the profession I quickly discovered that every day is different and often challenging – exactly what I was looking for in a career.

I joined Burges Salmon because I wanted to work for a firm whose main asset is its people. My previous experiences in HR were in manufacturing and sales which allocate more investment to product rather than people development.

Since joining Burges Salmon my role has continually developed. It is primarily reward-focused which is a great motivator and I have also benefited from professional development opportunities such as being the business lead for the implementation of our new HR system. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. I am also now the HR business partner which involves handling all HR matters for the lawyers across half of the legal departments.

I recently completed an MA in Human Resources Management, something that the firm supported. The course helped me to meet fellow HR professionals and understand the wider context in which HR professionals operate. I have also found that my increased knowledge helps support discussions that I have in the workplace on a day-to-day basis.

Burges Salmon has a huge range of sporting and social activities on offer which I definitely make the most of. I do yoga, pilates and run once a week with the running club. I also make the most of the discounts that Burges Salmon offers for theatre tickets. I definitely feel that I have the right work-life balance whilst carrying out a challenging and interesting role.
