Sonya May IT Service Desk Team Leader

Overview

After leaving school at 17, I studied for an NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration and a typing course at college. I went on to work in the accounts department of a local business as part of a Youth Training Scheme and then I joined a structural engineering firm where I got involved in all aspects of a busy office from answering the telephones to producing marketing material and invoicing.

In the summer of 2001, I joined Burges Salmon as a legal secretary.

As a legal secretary I worked in a number of departments including private client and wealth structuring, commercial, employment and pensions. I learnt a lot during this time, particularly around working to tight deadlines and being efficient, organised and flexible in my approach.

In 2004, I decided to apply for a position within the IT department and was successfully appointed as a 1st line IT support technician. This role involves providing assistance for all IT related issues across the many different areas of the business, meaning no two days are ever the same.

It is demanding and often hectic but I really enjoy what I do and find it rewarding. I have now progressed to the position of IT service desk team leader and am responsible for managing the workloads of seven people and ensuring that the team provide IT support in a smooth and efficient manner.

I enjoy working at Burges Salmon as it has allowed me the opportunity to develop in my career and I continue to grow both personally and professionally as a result.
