I studied at Durham University and joined Burges Salmon after completing my LPC in Guildford. The firm came highly recommended by a number of people as having a quality client base with a very strong reputation and, crucially, a client-focused outlook. On looking into it further, the combination of great people, interesting work and a fantastic location was, and still is 10 years later, a huge draw for me. I live on the fringes of Clifton, so I have a 10 minute cycle as my commute and, on weekends and evenings it’s just a short walk to Clifton village, the waterfront, the green space of Brandon Hill Park and the many shops and restaurants on the Triangle (or the city centre itself).

In the corporate team, we are encouraged to maintain a broad range of work, rather than getting pigeon-holed into any one practice area. This means there is real variety in the role which ranges from mergers and acquisitions and general corporate advice to private equity. While this can be challenging it does mean you're continually learning and there's a really good training and support network to ensure you're never out of your depth when tackling something for the first time. The open door policy we have here has definitely remained, even as the firm continues to grow. Much of the work I do also involves working as part of a team with other departments across the firm, so the fact we are all under one roof is a real plus as it's only ever a short walk to discuss a matter in person.

More and more of the work we do is cross-border and so we work very closely with a series of carefully chosen, like-minded “preferred firms” across the globe. Last year I was lucky enough to spend three weeks on secondment to one of our preferred firms in the US – a fantastic experience which involved a couple of weeks in their New York office and the remainder of the time in Washington and Cleveland.
