Burges Salmon has advised the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) on a £1.4 billion contract with BAE Systems to deliver the next Astute class submarine to the Royal Navy.

Agamemnon is the sixth nuclear-powered submarine in the Astute Class, which will protect the UK’s new aircraft carriers and nuclear deterrent. The contract covers the complete scope of build, test and commissioning activities for the vessel, which is scheduled to complete construction in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, and begin sea trials in 2023.

The firm’s team advising MoD on the Astute programme is led by senior associate Chris Chesterman, assisted by Melissa Jennings and Grace Dawson-Stephens.

Client partner Mark Paterson says:

“The signing of this contract is a culmination of 18 months’ work for us, and builds on our earlier advice to MoD on the fifth Astute class submarine. We are pleased to have helped our long-standing client to reach another key milestone in the Astute programme that will contribute to the ongoing protection of the UK’s interests.”
