Richard is a Partner in the firm's real estate disputes team. He advises on all aspects of freehold (development agreements, overage clauses, restrictive covenants) and leasehold (dilapidations, business tenancy issues, rent reviews) disputes and has considerable experience and expertise at all forms of dispute resolution including mediations, arbitrations as well as contested litigation.

Richard lectures on numerous subjects including specialist areas of landlord and tenant, real property and secured lending.

He is chairman of the South West England and Wales division of the Property Litigation Association.

  • Representing landowners on complex overage provisions in development agreement: successful declaratory proceedings brought in the Chancery Division and high value negotiated resolution achieved pre-listed Court of Appeal hearing.
  • Advising a national institution over regularising departing tenants' obligations in respect of terminal dilapidations dispute.
  • Representing landowners in a successful application to Upper Tribunal (Lands Chamber) over discharge of restrictive covenant impacting on development proposals for the land.
  • Representing a family owned business in substantial litigation in the Chancery Division involving property rights over a holiday park.
  • Advising a corporate client in negotiating and structuring the resolution of a complicated property claim over mineral issues, access and ownership rights.
