About

Ed is a senior associate in the firm’s Pensions and Lifetime Savings team having trained with the firm and qualified as a solicitor in 2013.

He advises on a wide range of pension legal issues, relating to both private and public pension schemes. He has specialist knowledge of public service pension schemes, including the LGPS, Firefighter Schemes, NHS Schemes and the Civil Service Pension Schemes. His public sector clients include LGPS funds and pools, government departments and local authorities. He also advises private and third sector companies and organisation in relation to their participation in public sector schemes.

Ed also advises trustees and sponsoring employers of private sector schemes on a wide range of pension matters, including de-risking, complex benefit issues and member complaints.

He is a member of the Association of Pension Lawyers.

Experience

  • LGPS Hampshire Pension Fund: advising on various legal issues for the fund, including complex employer admissions to and exits from the Fund; GMP reconciliation corrections; amalgamations of employers; and employer insolvencies.
  • Department for Education: advising on LGPS pension matters relating to children services interventions, including LGPS admission, risk sharing and negotiating guarantee provisions.
  • Welsh Pensions Partnership: advising the LGPS pension pool on governance matters, including drafting policies delineating stakeholder roles, and governance issues relating to management of their investment manager / operator agreements.
  • Various private sector schemes: advising on complex GMP equalisation questions, including in relation to money purchase benefits subject to GMP underpins.
  • LGPS Powys Pension Fund: assisting the fund with an IDRP complaint from a member relating to the exercise of discretionary powers, including advising the appeals panel and drafting the complaint response.
  • Department for Transport: advising on Fair Deal pension protection for c.3,000 staff transferring to Highways England and admission to the Civil Service Pension Scheme (the first ever of its kind).
