Burges Salmon has advised Bristol City Council on the transfer of waste collection and street cleansing in Bristol.

Bristol’s waste collection and street cleansing is now being provided by council-owned company, Bristol Waste Company, after Bristol City Council and contractor Kier (formerly May Gurney) agreed to end their existing contract.

The multi-disciplinary team from Burges Salmon, which comprised lawyers from its Commercial, Corporate, Environment and Employment units, advised Bristol City Council on the strategy for delivering the waste contract, which has involved setting up a new subsidiary company, the Bristol Waste Company, advising on its existing contract with Kier and advising on the exit strategy and negotiations.

Following a handover period, whereby employees, vehicles, equipment and facilities moved across to Bristol Waste Company, the new service started on Saturday 8 August 2015.

The new system will be operated for a year while the council looks in full detail at the best long-term service model.

Legal Director Stephanie Rickard, who led the Burges Salmon team, said: 'We are pleased to have advised our long-standing client Bristol City Council on this important transition, which will provide Bristol residents with much improved waste collection and street cleaning services.'
