Welcome to Employment Edit, our regular new email update giving the pick of the key developments in employment law from the last couple of weeks:

  • The new procedure for Acas early conciliation in employment tribunal claims will come into force on 6 April 2014 and will be mandatory for claims presented on or after 6 May 2014.  Acas have issued further information.
  • Employment tribunals will have the power to impose financial penalties on employers who lose an employment tribunal claim presented on or after 6 April 2014.
  • The maximum compensatory award for unfair dismissal will increase to £76,574 (subject to the cap of one year’s pay) and the amount of a week's pay (used, for example to calculate statutory redundancy payments and the basic award for unfair dismissal) will rise to £464. These new rates apply where the event giving rise to the compensation occurs on or after 6 April 2014.
