Overview

Richard is a highly experienced real estate transactional and advisory lawyer, with over 25 years’ experience advising high profile clients in both the public and private sector across a wide range of industries. Since joining the partnership in 2004, Richard has held a wide variety of key management roles including head of the firm’s Investment & Asset Management Team (with £5bn+ assets under management), head of the Real Estate Department and most recently chair of the 35 partner 125+ lawyer Built Environment Sector Group. He is also active in a number of industry bodies, in particular within the Senior Leadership Group of Real Estate Balance which campaigns for diversity and inclusion within the real estate industry and as a committee member of the British Council for Offices.

In addition to advising on complex large scale, long term mixed use development projects (Linmere, Beam Park, Coton Park), Richard specialises in advising real estate investment funds investing in offices, logistics, industrial and retail property and HQ requirements for tenants and corporate occupiers.

Richard has advised an impressive and diverse range of clients in both the public and private sectors including UK Atomic Energy Authority, John Lewis & Partners, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, HM Revenue & Customs, Ordnance Survey, Aviva Investors, FCA, Waterstones, The Crown Estate, Historic England, Transport for London, Beauty Pie, Docklands Light Railway, The Leathersellers’ Company, Waitrose & Partners, RWE Generation UK plc, Greater London Authority and Aerium.

  • advising John Lewis & Partners on the sale of Maidenhead Golf Club.
  • appointed to provide real estate transactional and advisory services to HM Revenue & Customs across its UK occupational property portfolio.
  • appointed by Ordnance Survey to provide real estate transactional and advisory services to its occupational freehold and leasehold property portfolio.
  • advising LGPS Central in connection with the establishment and creation of a £500 million direct real estate fund.
  • advising the Greater London Authority in connection with the 3,500+ unit residential development at Beam Park, Dagenham.
  • advising the UK Atomic Energy Authority in connection with the development of its Culham Science Centre, one of the world’s leading fusion, science and technology centres with funding from Legal & General Pensions.
  • advising the consortium of landowners (including Aviva Investors and Lands Improvement Holdings) on the £1.75 billion Linmere project, a 630 acre 5000+ residential unit scheme, 2m sq ft commercial space, several schools and leisure facilities.
  • advising The Leathersellers Company (a City of London Livery Company established in 1444) in connection with its Bishopsgate portfolio in the City of London.
  • advising on the £500 million+ Cadogan portfolio, comprising assets in the West End of London and the flagship One Central Square, Cardiff.
  • advising Historic England in connection with the development and commercial letting of Flaxmill Maltings, a globally significant industrial heritage site.
