We have approximately 160 business professionals at Burges Salmon, working across a wide range of areas.


The team includes: Central Finance; Accounts and Open File Management; Revenue Control; Billing; and Archives.

Central Finance: Responsibilities include performance measurement, procurement support, reporting, financial accounting, budgeting and forecasting and general management of the firm's finances. The team provides analysis and proactive advice and gives professional support in finance and procurement for partners and budget holders.

Accounts and Open File Management: Among other things, the team is responsible for the opening of client files, the firm's purchase ledger and expense payments together with a range of accounts services.

Revenue Control: The team manages the revenue cycle, ensuring the credit we give clients is appropriate and that the working capital on a matter is controlled. This involves liaising with partners, fee earners and clients as well as analysing payment trends and responding to queries from both clients and lawyers.

Billing: The billing team assists with the billing cycle, ensuring client and legal requirements are met. The team also produces client reports and assists lawyers and secretaries with a range of billing related queries.

Archives: The archives team is responsible for all aspects of storing and retrieving client files and assets such as deeds and wills.

Human Resources/The People Team

Our People Team provides a broad range of services across the business including recruitment and selection, induction and development processes, salary and reward policy and welfare services.

Learning and Development: We are committed to the training and development of all our people. From a designated training centre, the team provides a comprehensive range of training courses which include 'black letter' law seminars, IT training and professional and personal development courses.

Advisory: The People team works hard to make sure Burges Salmon is a great place to work. We provide a broad range of advisory services and strategic input to the business. Our remit includes departmental business partnering, on-boarding, people engagement, performance & development management systems, reward & recognition, client secondments, wellbeing and people policy and professional & statutory compliance.

Resourcing: Our ability to recruit talented and enthusiastic individuals has been vital to the firm's success over the years. Our award winning recruitment team works closely with marketing, learning and development and people operations to ensure an innovative, consistent and seamless approach to the way we attract and select our people.

Information technology

The IT department is responsible for maintaining and developing the firm's extensive data and telecommunications network. IT underpins much of the business from record keeping and document management through to time recording and communication. Our technically skilled, innovative and committed team delivers a first class service to the firm and keeps our business moving. Teams within our IT department are the IT Service Desk team, IT Infrastructure, IT Integration and IT Project Management and Planning.

Knowledge and Information Services

Our Knowledge and Information Services team provides a range of services to our legal teams to keep them up to date with legal, regulatory and market developments.

Our team includes the Head of Knowledge Management and six knowledge & information services team members who provide expert advice and assistance with:

  • business intelligence reports
  • company research and enquiries
  • delivery of current know how and precedents through firm-wide KM systems
  • management of hard copy and online information resources
  • news tracking
  • provision of advice and support for know-how projects
  • added value input to client pitches
  • training on KM and information services resources

Cutting edge KM systems and resources mean that our people have easy access to an extensive collection of best practice documents, standard forms and methodologies as well as a broad range of online tools to aid effectiveness, efficiency and quality.

We work closely with twelve Professional Support Lawyers who are solicitors or barristers with significant practical experience. They assist their departments with specialist research and support.


Our Marketing team works closely with lawyers, supporting them in achieving their business objectives. The team helps define business plans, develop marketing strategies and implement campaigns to maintain relationships with existing clients and create opportunities with prospective clients.

The team co-ordinates all elements of marketing for the firm including running the client database, designing and producing all literature, managing the website, PR and internal communications, social media, submissions for directories and awards, organising corporate hospitality, events and seminars and overseeing the tender and new business process.

Risk and Best Practice

Our Risk and Best Practice team provides advice and guidance to our people across many areas, including regulatory and professional obligations.

Our key services are:

  • Advice and support on AML
  • Conflict escalation service
  • Risk management advice
  • Guidance on SRA and Law Society obligations
  • Advice on Standards and best practice, focussed on continuous improvement
  • Support for our COLP and COFA
  • Collaborative work with Finance, IT, File opening and Data Management.

Operational Services

Our operational services team ensures that our business runs as efficiently as possible. Services in this area range from large scale document production to the the provision of state of the art video conferencing.

The team works together as a whole although each has a specific area of responsibility. The teams are:

Legal Support: This is the largest team in the group and has a wide and varying range of responsibilities including internal and external mail and fax and courier services as well as a full reprographic service. The team also manages the purchase and supply of all stationery.

Front of house: This team provides a key service to our clients and visitors, including managing meeting rooms, taxi bookings and co-ordination of client car parking facilities. 

Switchboard: Our team of four handles between 700 and 900 incoming calls each day.


Our facilities team provides a range of services which optimise the day to day running of the business including security & reception work, cleaning, maintenance, space planning, office moves, helpdesk, landlord liaison and building administration.

Programme Management Unit

Our six-strong Programme Management Unit is responsible for supporting the development and delivery of the firm’s portfolio of business projects and initiatives.

The unit strives to be a recognised centre of project and programme excellence so that we can share and develop expertise across the firm as well as within our department.

In addition to managing business projects in line with the firm’s project governance structure, the team delivers major change programmes, ensuring they meet our business requirements.

Work within the unit involves:

  • supporting lawyers to ensure project management principles and practices are applied in the delivery of legal services with particular emphasis on controlling costs
  • managing project programmes with complex project issues and risks
  • working with senior stakeholders
  • delivering project objectives and managing change
  • working with business leads to evaluate methods and approaches to ensure the benefits promised in a project are realised.

Business Solutions

The Business Solutions team is increasingly busy meeting client requirements alongside lawyers to deliver consistently superior services and value. Our growing team blends management consultancy, business analysis and legal and project management expertise to provide a truly rounded service.

We are at our best when a client is:

  • faced with managing multiple legal and related work streams
  • embarking on business change projects or programmes
  • about to mobilise a new contract
  • addressing inefficient processes that are not aligned or running effectively.

The team has also developed and launched the Burges Salmon® Due Diligence Hub® - a collaborative online due diligence database capturing legal risks relevant to a transaction. This product is unique in combining:

The Business Solutions team provides the following services both internally and externally:

  • Strategy development – development and analysis through to implementation.
  • Project and programme management support – managing complex work programmes.
  • Operating model analysis and improvement – implementing measurable and lasting improvements.
  • Project risk management support – using ISO 31000 Risk Management Principles and Guidelines and Association of Project Management best practice.
  • Lessons learnt and continuous improvement – ensuring that all stakeholders can develop and improve.

The Business Solutions team also undertakes research and development and works closely with IT to move forward in utilising newer technologies. 

Achieving change hinges on people and behaviours so we also work closely with our Learning and Development team to achieve success.


In addition to our lawyers, our practice areas are supported by a team of secretaries across a range of areas including:

Departmental Secretarial Co-ordinators –The team is responsible for ensuring we provide excellent client service to the business and the firm's clients. Our coordinators are team leaders with proven track records in people management. Good communication allied with flexibility is key in successfully managing secretaries and departmental administrators across our departments.

Management PAs – The Management PA team provides high level support to the firm’s Chiefs and senior managers. This is a fast-paced role with a need for super organisation and pro-activity. Team members pride themselves on being smooth operators with a confidential and professional approach.

Secretarial – Our secretaries are highly skilled with the ability to multi-task and meet tight, often changing, deadlines. Our secretaries support lawyers on a wide range of tasks including document production, diary management, compliance support and billing.

Departmental Administrators – Departmental Administrators support lawyers and secretaries within a designated department. We look for people with previous administrative experience who are keen to develop within a collaborative and supportive environment. This role gives valuable insight into a large commercial law firm and provides the opportunity to progress within the firm.
