About

Richard heads the firm’s Pensions and Lifetime Savings practice. He graduated from Bristol University with a first class degree in law and completed the Legal Practice Course in Nottingham with Distinction. He joined the firm in September 1997 and became a Partner in May 2006, and has been Head of Pensions since 2011.

He is a full member of the Association of Pension Lawyers and was a member of the Parliamentary and Legislative Committee for three years. He also holds the Certificate in Pensions Law from the University of Bristol.

Experience

  • Honda Group UK Pension Scheme: All legal activity on this scheme for nearly two decades. This has included valuation support, section 75 issues, scheme benefit redesign and advice on contingent asset support for this £1.5 billion scheme.
  • John Lewis Partnership: Advising in relation to its 165,000 member DB pension scheme, including on strategic planning and all legal issues regarding a change of pension administrators.
  • AT&T Pension Scheme: Advising on all pensions matters including advice following the IBM Court case, advice in relation to a closure to accrual, valuation support and a buy-in project.
  • Leonardo Electronics Pension Scheme: Lead adviser since 2009 on this £1 billion plus scheme. This has included advising on a £100 million buy-in project for pensioners, and complicated benefit redesign work.
  • The Crown Estate: Advising on all pensions issues, including a review of the new consolidated Rules. Also advising on all other live pensions issues including auto-enrolment issues and booklet reviews.
  • Western Power Distribution: Advising on all pension arrangements for over 20 years.
