Through community engagement we aim to drive meaningful social impact and strengthen the bonds between our firm and our communities.
We are dedicated to building strong, thriving communities in which our people are proud to make a difference. Community engagement is integral to our culture, reflecting our commitment to being a force for good and giving back by sharing our expertise and resources.
This commitment is valued by our people, as evidenced by their ongoing contribution of time and resources. By collaborating with clients, charities, not-for-profit organisations and community representatives, we address inequalities, promote good citizenship, support environmental initiatives and advance social mobility.
Our efforts include a wide range of activities such as pro bono legal services, volunteering, trusteeships and school governor roles. We also offer in-kind support, which involves providing office facilities for charities and community groups and donating kit and resources.

of our people actively volunteering in local communities
Our internal network of community champions, known as ‘BEngaged,’ plays a key role in encouraging involvement.
Over 50% of our people actively get involved in community work and we support skills development through mentoring, coaching, and trusteeships and regularly host information sessions to connect our people with the work of key charities.
At Burges Salmon, charitable giving is a cornerstone of our community engagement efforts, enabling us to support charities through fundraising and the Burges Salmon Charitable Trust.
Our people-led fundraising initiatives focus on a core charitable theme, which currently is âFairer Futures for Young Peopleâ. These initiatives have raised over £100,000 since 2019. Activities include payroll giving, âlast hour’ earning donations and fundraising events.
The Burges Salmon Charitable Trust offers financial support to community organisations with a focus in the South West and Edinburgh regions. This includes schemes addressing children, education, homelessness and the elderly.
For larger contributions, we partner with the Quartet Community Foundation, supporting local causes in Bristol and beyond.
Together, these efforts reflect our commitment to giving back and to driving meaningful change.
At Burges Salmon, we are committed to advancing social mobility by driving equal access to the legal profession and fostering a fairer society.
Our initiatives create opportunities for individuals from diverse socio-economic backgrounds to succeed, ensuring we attract the best talent while promoting inclusion and different perspectives in our workplace
Through our Working with Schools programme, we support students aged 14â18, particularly those from state schools or less advantaged backgrounds, with activities such as Law Information Days and Bright Sparks Work Experience.
We also engage with local schools and organisations, including Envision, Into University, and the Social Mobility Business Partnership, to deliver confidence-building and employability workshops.
The sector-wide collaboration PRIME enables improved access to the legal profession through participating firms enabling activities such as work experience.
We fulfil our âPRIME Commitmentâ through several strands of activity, including our blind and contextual recruitment practices, engagement beyond Russell Group universities, and apprenticeships.
Our volunteers actively contribute as reading buddies for primary school children, while our blind and contextual recruitment practices and legal apprenticeships ensure wider access to opportunities across the legal sector.
We provide free legal advice to charities and through not-for-profit organisations that align with our responsible business focus areas such as inclusion, human rights, and environmental sustainability.
We have connections with organisations such as LawWorks, The Quartet Foundation, and Support Through Court. These relationships enable us to extend our reach and impact, providing crucial legal assistance to those who might otherwise go without.
