About

Pete is a senior associate in the firm’s Real Estate team having joined Burges Salmon in 2011.

As part of the Estates and Land Group, he spends his time working exclusively on property transactions affecting rural land.

He has particular expertise in acting for banks and landowners in relation to agricultural lending transactions and in the dying art of unregistered conveyancing but covers the full gambit of rural property matters including agricultural tenancies, farm sales and purchases and estate management issues.

Pete is a member of the Agricultural Law Association.

Experience

  • National Westminster Bank PLC: Leading a team of lawyers on the refinance of one of the country’s largest farming enterprises. The security property was split between the east and the south of England and valued in excess of £100 million.
  • HSBC UK Bank plc: Supporting a refinance worth c.£50 million of one of the country’s most significant landed estates on its ambitious expansion plans. Working cross-departmentally to achieve completion within a very tight timescale.
  • Private Individual: Acting for a private individual on their off-market sale of farmland for £5 million. The transaction was distinctive because of the difficulties in removing a sitting tenant and a requirement for sensitivity.
  • Church Commissioners for England: Acting on various farm and land sales across the country as part of a portfolio re-balancing exercise.
  • Family Trusts: Acting for two family trusts on the split of farmland and other property between beneficiaries. The work included sales to third parties, transfers between family members and tax planning.
  • Private Individual: Acting for a private landowner on their gift of their farm to a charity. The transaction required careful drafting to protect the principles of our client’s gift with the requirements of the charity to receive a workable asset.
