Burges Salmon partners with the newly launched Greater South West Robotics Adoption Hub

We have partnered with the newly formed £9.8 million Greater South West Robotics Adoption Hub, a cutting-edge technology hub, bringing together businesses, universities and industry partners to support the greater adoption of robotics and automation technologies.

The hub is set to benefit South West businesses and will provide three interconnected strands of activity. Firstly, an advisory service, offering one-to-one support to businesses exploring robotics adoption. It will also host a showcase programme enabling organisations to see robotics in action through industrial site visits, demonstration facilities, and proof-of-concept activities, and thirdly an ecosystem programme, bringing together adopters, technology suppliers and specialist support organisations through events, networking, and knowledge-sharing activities.

To support the hub, the firm has joined a consortium of 23 partners including 15 businesses from industry, academia, and local government as the sole legal partner. As part of our role, we will provide legal advice to firms navigating the complexity of robotics regulatory compliance, procurement and maintenance contracting, data protection, and cybersecurity. We will do this through speaking at events on the legal aspects of adopting robotics – for instance, what businesses need to know to remain compliant and manage risks.

Other consortium members include: University of Bristol, University of Bath, Loop Technology, NCC, University of the West of England, GKN Aerospace Services, CFMS Services, Deloitte, Oxford Innovation Services and Dyson Technical Training amongst others.

“The South West is primed to adopt more robotics into our industries and businesses. This programme has the potential to help organisations improve productivity, tackle unique challenges, and respond to workforce issues in ways we’ve never seen before. We’re excited to be part of this consortium, and play our role in driving forward the South West’s position as a leader in robotics and automation.”

Martin Cook, Partner

“We’re very excited to launch this initiative across the greater southwest region, from Gloucestershire to the Solent and the Scillies. Robotics can help businesses of all sizes and types across our region become even more productive. Our Robotics Adoption Hub will offer a common ‘front door’ to the potential of robotics, covering topics from the design and procurement of robots to their safety and cybersecurity.”

Professor Arthur Richards, Professor of Robotics at the University of Bristol and project lead

The Greater South West Robotics Adoption Hub is expected to be fully operational by January 2027. For more information about visit https://southwestrobotics.org.uk/
