Joining a new firm is an important career move, and knowing what to expect from the recruitment journey can make all the difference. At Burges Salmon, our Experienced Hire interview process is designed to be clear, supportive and genuinely reflective of who we are.

Here’s an overview of what you can typically expect.

1. Your application

Once you submit your application, our Resourcing team carefully reviews your CV and supporting details. We’re looking for relevant experience, alignment with the role and an understanding of what draws you to Burges Salmon. If you’re shortlisted, one of our recruiters will be in touch to guide you through the next steps.

2. Initial conversation

Most candidates begin with an informal call with a member of our team. This isn’t a formal interview, it’s a two way conversation. You’ll learn more about the team, the role and our culture, and we’ll explore your experience and motivations. It’s a great opportunity to ask questions and get a feel for whether the role is right for you.

3. First stage interview

The first stage is usually a competency‑based interview led by the hiring manager and another member of the team. We want to understand your technical skills, how you approach problem‑solving, and how you collaborate with others. We’ll explore real examples from your past experience and hear where you feel you can add value to the firm.

4. Second stage interview or task

Here, we move beyond questions and into how you work. Whether it’s a task, presentation or further conversation with the team, this stage gives you space to show how you think independently, how you communicate and how you approach challenges. It also offers a more realistic insight into the expectations of the role and the impact you could have.

5. Offer and onboarding

If you’re successful, your recruiter will talk you through the offer, answer any questions and explain what happens next. Once you accept, our onboarding team will support you through your transition into the firm, from pre-employment checks to your first day and beyond.

At every stage, our aim is simple: to provide a fair, engaging and transparent experience. We’ll support you, but we’ll also challenge you. We look for people who think boldly, act with integrity and bring the ambition to grow and make a lasting impact. Our interview process is designed to stretch you, to understand the real you, and to see how you show up when it matters. If you’re ready for that, and excited by it, then you can truly expect great things here.
