Where will you work?

You will be based in our Legal Service Delivery Centre during the first year of the Apprenticeship. The Centre plays an integral role in supporting our legal departments and clients. In the second year of the apprenticeship you will complete four month ‘seats’ within three legal departments of your choice. This will give you an insight into different areas of law at Burges Salmon and the chance to work with a variety of high profile clients.

Who will you work with?

In the first year of your Apprenticeship you will work within a team of paralegals and report to the team manager. You will be assigned a ‘buddy’ who will be a more senior paralegal within the team. They will provide support in respect of your work and guidance on life at the firm. In the second year of the Apprenticeship you will be assigned an associate lawyer supervisor within each legal department. They will be responsible for delegating a wide range of work to you and will provide you with regular feedback.

To start with you will be involved in a range of administrative level tasks that will give you exposure to a variety of work. These may include:

  • assisting with the opening, progress and closing of files
  • attending meetings and taking notes
  • managing data/records
  • reviewing documents
  • collating bundles for court
  • collating transactional documentation
  • carrying out research
  • handling confidential and sensitive information
  • understanding and utilising basic financial information
  • communicating both in writing and orally with people from across the firm.

You will start your Apprenticeship by learning the basics. As time goes on you will experience different areas of the firm, diversify your workload and increase your level of responsibility. By the end of the Apprenticeship you will have developed a thorough understanding of what it is like to work in a top commercial law firm .

We will pay you a competitive starting salary of £16,000 pa.

In addition to this, you won't have to pay for any of your study and you will be able to take advantage of our extensive benefits and rewards.

What does an Apprenticeship involve?

Involving through-the-job and class room learning, Apprenticeships give first-hand insight into life at Burges Salmon and open doors to various legal roles, including qualification as a solicitor.

How many Apprenticeships do you offer?

Four legal apprentices joined us in September 2018 and we will be looking for a similar number to join us in September 2019.

How long is the programme?

The programme will last for two years.

What does the programme involve?

The programme involves completing a Level 3 Paralegal Apprenticeship with additional study to give you a Level 4 qualification (equivalent to the first year of university). Obtaining this Level 4 qualification means that you will be able to complete the Level 7 Solicitor apprenticeship in a reduced period of time (five years, instead of six). We will support those who have the inclination and ability to complete the Level 7 qualification.

Where will you be based?

All positions will be based at One Glass Wharf, our Bristol HQ. Located in the heart of the Temple Quay area, we sit in the legal and business hub of the city, only five minutes' walk from Temple Meads station.

Why us?

Burges Salmon is a great place to work on both a professional and personal level.

Our lawyers are motivated and passionate about the work that they do, producing a first class service for clients such as John Lewis Partnership, The Discovery Channel, The Premier League and The Crown Estate. The fact that we are all based at our Bristol HQ means that we work very well as a team and are able to deliver excellent results for our clients.

But it's not all work here.

We have an active social life and there are plenty of opportunities to participate in corporate responsibility activities as well as sports and social events. To find out more about what it's like to work here, please see 'Working at Burges Salmon'.
