Digital Enablement

Empowering our people through smart technology

Digital enablement at Burges Salmon is delivered through a firm wide Digital Enablement Programme, providing a consistent framework for introducing, embedding and scaling new technologies across the business.

The programme focuses on three core areas:

  1. Generative AI – embedding AI into everyday legal and business workflows
  2. Data – strengthening data quality and governance to support insight and decision making
  3. Innovation Business Partnership – aligns our Innovation team with specific areas of the business to ensure deep understanding of legal process and client service needs and strategic alignment of technology solutions

This structured approach ensures technology adoption is purposeful, sustainable and aligned to the firm’s long term strategy.

Adoption and Governance on AI

Burges Salmon has taken a deliberate and responsible approach to adopting artificial intelligence.

AI is introduced in layers:

  • Microsoft Copilot is available firm‑wide, integrating AI into familiar Microsoft 365 tools to support drafting, analysis and knowledge work.
  • Specialist legal AI tools, including Harvey, are introduced through structured pilots and phased rollouts to support deeper legal workflows such as research, document analysis and knowledge interrogation.

Adoption is use‑case‑led, starting with real client and business needs rather than technology for its own sake. Tools are rolled out in cohorts, supported by targeted training, practical guidance and ongoing support.

AI adoption is overseen by a dedicated Responsible AI Board, supported by clear policies and client engagement guidance. This ensures innovation is aligned with professional obligations, client expectations and the firm’s values.

Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is a core foundation of our strategy.

Security, privacy and risk considerations are embedded into the selection, piloting and rollout of all new technologies. This includes:

  • Secure platforms and infrastructure
  • Clear policies governing the use of AI and digital tools
  • Ongoing oversight of data protection and confidentiality
  • Close collaboration between technology, risk and governance teams

This approach ensures that innovation enhances, rather than compromises, trust, resilience and client confidentiality.

Workforce and skills

People are central to successful digital adoption.

We invest in building digital confidence and capability across the firm through:

  • A Digital Champions Network of lawyers and business professionals who support adoption and share practical use cases
  • A team of Innovation Business Partners that connect technology to service delivery
  • Structured training, refresher sessions and ongoing support
  • Role‑specific and practice‑specific guidance aligned to how people actually work
  • Ongoing focus on confidence, wellbeing and change management

This peer‑led, human‑centred model builds trust, accelerates learning and helps digital adoption embed naturally across teams.

Investment and infrastructure

Burges Salmon has made sustained investment in the technology and infrastructure needed to support digital enablement at scale.

This includes:

  • Cloud first infrastructure
  • Firm‑wide deployment of Microsoft Copilot and Harvey
  • Investment in specialist AI tools through structured pilots and rollouts
  • Secure data foundations to support analytics and AI
  • Programme‑level governance to ensure investment is prioritised and delivers value

Investment decisions are guided by business outcomes rather than technology trends, ensuring flexibility as the legal technology market continues to evolve.
