Matthew is a partner in our Dispute Resolution team, who prides himself on working with clients to resolve their most complex disputes and achieve their commercial objectives. He has been described in Legal 500 (2020) as ‘an outstanding lawyer, very hard-working, acutely aware of his clients’ commercial objectives, a superb strategist, and very pragmatic and easy to work with’.

Playing a lead role in our dispute resolution team, Matthew works with his colleagues to help clients arrive at the right solution to their issue, minimising impact and maximising success. He is supported by our extensive dispute resolution practice with a proven track record in the highest-profile cases and cross-border, multi-sector expertise.

Matthew specialises in:

  • Financial Services Regulatory. Advising firms on FCA enforcement actions, internal investigations and consumer complaints and FOS claims.
  • Insurance Recovery for Policyholders. Advising commercial policyholders on complex and disputed insurance coverage claims. Matt has particular experience advising on All Risks / Property Damage, Professional Indemnity, Legal Expenses, D&O, W&I and Public / Products Liability.
  • Audit and Accountancy. Acting for and against accountancy firms on substantial professional negligence claims, investigations and enforcement action taken by the FRC.
  • Corporate and Commercial Disputes. Acting for clients in a variety of sectors on substantial business disputes, including major supply contract disputes, M&A litigation, asset recovery and injunctions.

Matthew has acted on successful proceedings in the High Court and has experience of arbitration and ADR, including successfully resolving a large proportion of his matters by way of mediation.

Experience
  • Advising leading accountancy firms in relation to Financial Reporting Council investigations.
  • Acting for a Guatemalan energy company in a claim for coverage under a machinery breakdown and business interruption policy. 
  • Advising a large bank on a claim against a leading firm of chartered surveyors for negligent over-valuation of 91 commercial properties used as security for a £125m loan.
  • Acting for a construction contractor in a variety of claims for coverage under PI and EAR policies arising from a £650m PFI project.
  • Acting for a manufacturing company in relation to a €13m claim for breach of warranty under an SPA and for indemnity under a W&I policy.
