About

Nisha specialises in transactional intellectual property, and regularly advises on the creation, development, protection, management and exploitation of commercial intellectual property.

She has a particular focus on R&D and innovation and supports our clients’ intellectual property needs at every stage as they grow and evolve through their innovation lifecycle.

Nisha joined Burges Salmon in 2020 having spent several years in-house in both industry (for a globally renowned innovative consumer electronic goods company) and in the academic research sector (for a Russell Group university). As such, she possesses a unique understanding of the legal and commercial challenges within the innovation sector.

She also provides strategic intellectual property support on complex projects, and has a sector focus in defence (she has in-depth knowledge of MoD IP DEFCONs), nuclear fusion, manufacturing and life sciences.

Experience

  • Ministry of Defence: Advising on a number of complex and high value projects, including the Nuclear Submarine Programme.
  • Ultra Electronics Limited: Advising on the hive-down of UEL’s business into its divisions, including transfer of its material contracts and IP to seven newly incorporated subsidiary companies.
  • UK Atomic Energy Authority: Advising on complex IP issues across various projects, including STEP, a UK-led, world-leading programme to develop fusion energy, scale it, and then deliver it at pace. 
  • Bristol City Council: Advising on IP aspects of City Leap, a first of a kind project in the UK, aimed at bringing together private sector and community partners to deliver a long-term programme of energy and infrastructure investment.
  • AOTI, Inc.: Advising the US medical technology group on the IP aspects of its successful admission to trading (at £140m) on AIM.
  • Department for Business and Trade (formerly Department for International Trade): Negotiating IP chapters of the UK’s Free Trade Agreements for the former Department of International Trade, with a particular focus on patents, data and market exclusivity, designs and trade marks.
