Emily trained at Burges Salmon and qualified into the Pensions and Lifetime Savings team in September 2026.
Emily attended the University of Exeter and graduated with a degree in Law in 2023. She then completed a Masters in Legal Practice at the University of Law receiving a distinction. This encapsulated both components of the Solicitors Qualifying Examinations (SQE).
During her two-year training contract, Emily undertook six seats and upon qualification, has spent a total of eight months in the Pensions team. Her other seats were with the Dispute Resolution, Real Estate, Competition and Funds & Financial Regulation teams.
Experience
- Pensions arrangements: Supporting colleagues in providing day-to-day legal advice to trustee clients on a range of pensions issues, including the interpretation of scheme documentation, member queries, scheme governance and the exercise of trustee discretions.
- Compliance issues: Reviewing scheme documentation and preparing advice on key compliance issues such as section 37 certifications.
- Risk transfer projects: Acting for trustees on a range of risk transfer projects, including reviewing and drafting benefit specifications and preparing advice on trustee protections and closed cases
- Confidential projects: Advising in relation to a broad range of issues including complex historic documentation issues and the impact on scheme benefits, advice in relation to member cases, scheme closure advice, and drafting bespoke documents.
