James joined Burges Salmon in 1994 and was for many years the firm’s head of human resources. In that time, he witnessed the successful growth of the firm from a partnership of around 30 partners to well over 100.
In 2024, James moved to his current role where, with the benefit of his experience with the firm, he is now responsible for a wide range of strategic and operational people functions relating to partners. These include partner promotion, integration, well-being, reward, performance management and succession. In working closely with the firm’s leadership team, he seeks to ensure that the firm’s strategic goals and values are met, developing strong working relationships with partners across the business.
As a member of the People leadership team, he works with his colleagues in ensuring that the people strategy is formulated and and delivered in order to meet the needs of the business.
In 2022, James was one of the recipients of two Outstanding Contribution awards at the firm’s annual general meeting.
