Rhiannon joined Burges Salmon as a Director in 2024 in our Dispute Resolution team.

Prior to joining the firm, Rhiannon was Head of the Financial Disruptions Litigation team at a UK Government Agency for several years and handled all aspects of domestic and international civil recovery under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 (POCA), including Account Freezing and Forfeiture Orders, Property Freezing Orders, Unexplained Wealth Orders and Civil Recovery Orders.

Rhiannon led her team to several high-profile and precedent setting outcomes including one of the first crypto wallet freezing orders made under new powers granted by the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 and the first forfeiture of sanctioned funds under POCA. Rhiannon has specific legal expertise in litigating claims relating to complex international fraud and money laundering, breaches of sanctions legislation and the recovery of crypto assets.

She is also an international arbitration specialist, operating both in the UK and overseas (particularly in Asia). She has conducted multiple high value commercial arbitration cases under the auspices of the LCIA, ICC and SIAC rules and has also acted for investors pursuing bilateral investment treaty claims under the ICSID and UNCITRAL rules.

Experience

  • Obtained the first crypto wallet freezing order for a UK Government Agency using new powers under the Economic Crime and Transparency Act 2023
  • Secured a precedent setting civil recovery order representing the first ever forfeiture of sanctioned funds in England and Wales under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002
  • Acted on a civil recovery case relating to large-scale fraud and embezzlement in Azerbaijan and secured the forfeiture of a multi-million pound asset portfolio
  • Acted on a prohibition order case relating to funds arising from a c. USD $250m arbitral award allegedly connected to a multi-billion fraud in relation to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal
  • Acted for South-East Asian investors in a USD $150m ICSID arbitration under a bilateral investment treaty against an Asian state in respect of a renewable energy project
  • Acted for an Italian manufacturing company in respect of a multi-million pound dispute with an Israeli company under the LCIA arbitration rules
