About

Tom is a private wealth lawyer who advises families on tax, trusts and succession matters. He has a particular focus on issues affecting estates, landowners, farmers and family businesses.

He is highly experienced in structuring and succession planning for estates, farms and family businesses. His expertise includes complex capital gains tax and inheritance tax matters, partnerships, family trusts, Wills and probate. He works hand in hand with colleagues across the practice to ensure that clients receive joined up advice on related property, corporate, family, dispute, financing and employment matters.

Tom’s work includes advising trustees (including offshore trustees) on related matters and tax advice relating to settling disputes, especially those involving land.

Tom is also an expert on the establishment and management of sporting clubs for the purposes of the VAT exemption, regularly advising the owners and managers of sporting estates across the UK.

Experience

• Implementing generational wealth transfers for substantial family enterprises, introducing trust structures for next-generation partners and advising on inheritance tax reliefs expected after April 2026 under draft legislation.
• Assisting offshore trustees with tax structuring of UK land holdings subject to inheritance tax, including implications of changes for non-domiciled settlors and UK agricultural land held in offshore structures.
• Advising on and implementing the division of substantial businesses, trusts and estates between family members.
• Supporting families with mental capacity matters and their implications for succession strategies.
• Advising on complex historical trust structures, including failed tax planning. Modernising operations, winding up trusts and managing HMRC reporting obligations.
