Net zero and the water industry – a challenge that can be met?

Michael Barlow and Joanne Attwood have written a piece for Practical Law on Climate Change/ Net Zero and the Water Industry.  Whilst the Water/ Wastewater Industry is one of the most energy intensive industries in the UK the industry is in a unique position to achieve net zero given potential opportunities across the sector arising from large landholdings (which can accommodate renewables), sludge (which can be used in Anaerobic digestion) and sewage (which can be used in district heating schemes). Despite the obvious challenges, the water industry plans to become carbon neutral by 2030 as part of its Public Interest Commitment (PIC) (see Water UK: Public Interest Commitment, 25 April 2019). It is the first industry in the UK to make such a commitment. Although achieving this plan will require buy-in from the whole industry, it is in a unique position to be able to drive such change because of the nature of its operations and assets.
