Andrew Densham CBE

Andrew Densham, who has died, was a huge figure in the history of Burges Salmon as well as in the field of agricultural law.  His name is still mentioned with awe and often gratitude by farmers and agents across the country.

He joined Burges Salmon in 1965 becoming a Partner in 1970.  In the 2010 history of the firm “Resist the Usual” Neil Porter described Andrew thus:

“…he was a natural advocate brimming with self-confidence, a large outgoing man who struck an immediate rapport with country agents and with their clients.  He was an extremely witty if somewhat outrageous raconteur with a nimble and creative mind.”

Andrew inherited an agricultural practice originally established by Wilfred Scammell and he developed it into the pre-eminent national practice that continues to this day. 

He took on the writing of Scammell’s Law of Agricultural Holdings which became appropriately Scammell & Densham’s Law of Agricultural Holdings.  His style was clear and practical and beloved of agents. 

He was appointed a Deputy Circuit Judge in 1982 and he became Senior Partner of this firm in 1992. In 2000 he was made a CBE in recognition of his services to agriculture. 

There will be a thanksgiving on 30 November which was Andrew’s birthday.
