Burges Salmon re-appointed to Severn Trent legal panel

Independent UK law firm Burges Salmon is pleased to have been reappointed to the legal panel of FTSE 100 water company Severn Trent, with the firm retaining its place on the main panel covering day-to-day core business activities.

As one of Britain’s largest water companies, Severn Trent provides over four million households with fresh, clean drinking water every day – the equivalent to two billion litres – which it then takes away again, cleans, treats and returns safely to the environment.

With an investment target of £15 billion over the next five years, its largest ambition to date, Severn Trent appointed its legal panel firms in line with its two-point corporate strategy, including its net zero and sustainability strategy, with a target to significantly reduce emissions by 2030, and its societal strategy with a pledge to lift 100,000 customers out of poverty by 2030.

Severn Trent expects its panel firms to work with it in the pursuit of these goals whilst also demonstrating their individual efforts towards achieving sustainability targets and through initiatives aimed at developing employability skills.

Michael Barlow, partner and head of Water at Burges Salmon, comments: “We are proud to continue our collaboration with Severn Trent and we look forward to working closely with its team to support and advance our client’s ambitious goals. Our re-appointment is a testament to our expertise in the Water sector and to our firm’s authentic approach to ESG with an aim to have a positive legacy that contributes to a better, safer and more sustainable future.”

Burges Salmon is renowned for its expertise in the Water sector, offering strategic advice across areas such as environment and regulation, framework agreements and construction, consenting for major infrastructure projects, procurement processes, employment, pensions, corporate governance, IT projects, and dispute resolution. Its cross-firm Water sector team understands the specific legislation and regulatory practices and advises on high-profile matters for a diverse range of clients including statutory undertakers, licensees, and supply chain companies. The firm’s market-leading Environment team also provides expert counsel on water law, advising on water pollution prosecutions, abstraction issues and flooding claims.
