Introduction

Working in a Business Professional role at Burges Salmon offers a unique and rewarding experience; business professionals bring a diverse set of skills that are crucial to the firm’s success. From managing client relationships to ensuring smooth operations, the contributions of business professionals are invaluable.

The Role of Business Professionals
At Burges Salmon, business professionals encompass a variety of roles; our departments being Marketing, IT, Finance, Operations and People (Human Resources). Each role in all these various departments play a pivotal part in supporting the firm’s legal services and enhancing its overall efficiency.

Day in the Life

A typical day for a business professional at Burges Salmon is dynamic and varied. there isn’t a typical day in the life as each role is different and unique. To put it into perspective, below are different snippets from people within our BP departments.

People Team – Lucy Flook (Resourcing)

From my role as a resourcing coordinator within the Onboarding team, I might start my day by attending a team meeting with the resourcing team to discuss team updates and projects. Later, I could be collaborating with the IT department to arrange for new joiner equipment to be set up. An afternoon might involve working with the L&D team to ensure that everything is on track from an induction training perspective. I can end the day by meeting with the security team to ensure that all ID badges are set up and granted necessary access ahead of a new joiner starting.

A typical day for a Team Leader within Legal Support is very dynamic, as Legal Support is a reactive and customer focused department with a variety of requests which as one of the Team Leaders, I oversee. Legal Support processes all incoming and outgoing national and international post, and when requested hand deliver documents. Also, it manages the retrieval and submission of files and Deeds from our archive storage contractor, and produces letters, documents, court bundles etc from reprographic requests, via the task management system ‘Marval’. As a Team Leader we also arrange couriers, both nationally and internationally, to deliver and collect everything from important documents to work from home equipment for new starters. Being a reactive department each day is never the same and, in my eyes, makes Legal Support the essential hub of Burges Salmon.

IT – Jessica Miles (Useradmin)

A day in the life as an IT Service Desk Team Leader can really vary from day to day. A typical day will be made up of meetings with the other technology leaders to discuss on-going projects or problem records, preparing user accounts for new joiners or assisting my team in completing tickets raised by our users. If we have firmwide issues or outages, I’m required to think on my feet and work with the team to provide workarounds, ensuring our users’ work is only minimally disrupted. On occasion, I’ll assist with our work experience schemes, both preparing their devices & accounts to use, and talking to students to give them an idea of what a career in Technology looks like. The part of my role as Team Leader that I really enjoy is the people management aspect, checking my team’s general well-being and forming those relationships that will strengthen our team and allow us to work to the best of our ability.

Marketing – Amelia Hawkins (Digital)

A day in the life of a business professional within the Marketing team at Burges Salmon is very varied dependant on the day. Each role is unique, so there isn’t a typical structure. For example, as a Digital Marketing Apprentice within the Marketing team, I may begin my day by checking our social media scheduler to ensure there are no clashes and to create assets for the posts that are scheduled in. Later, I could collaborate with the Design team to brainstorm ideas to ensure our content aligns with brand guidelines and is as visually engaging as possible. In the afternoon, I tend to respond to requests within our digital inbox, these could be requests for social posts, website amends or creating content for the firm’s Instagram account. Recently, my days at work have heavily consisted of assisting with the new website project, by proofing pages and uploading content ready for the launch date.

Finance – Jack Moon (Payroll)

A typical day for someone working in payroll varies depending on which point in the month you are at as you follow the monthly payroll cycle, due to this throughout the month you will use a wide variety of systems and tools. Even though tasks vary, a daily routine is generally followed which consists of starting the day with a team meeting to discuss upcoming tasks and plan the day for the team, after the meeting the payroll inbox is then checked and time is spent answering queries or gathering reports that have been requested using Excel or Business Objects, later I will then proceed to go ahead with processing items for the upcoming payroll which can vary from: adding payments to payslips, uploading mass changes to iTrent using data conversion runs, processing parental leave etc. Later in the day I will then attend any meetings for upcoming projects where I am collaborating with different departments within Burges Salmon. I then end the day with checking in with the payroll team so see if any help is required or if any urgent queries/requests have come into our inbox that require attention.
