Burges Salmon has advised Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG) on a 40 MW battery storage project, located in Maldon, Essex.

The Maldon project marks the first of seven utility-scale grid batteries planned by GIG across the UK that were purchased from developer Capbal Ltd in 2021. The partners then agreed to deliver an initial 187 MWh of distribution-connected capacity across seven projects located in highly congested areas of the UK network, including in Scotland and South East England. All of them will provide frequency response and balancing services to domestic energy group National Grid.

The Burges Salmon team advising on the deal was led by Burges Salmon energy partners Ross Fairley and Camilla Usher-Clark, with assistance from others including Laura Sharples, Alec Whiter and Shalini Jagmohan.

Ross Fairley comments: “We are delighted to get the first of these battery projects over the line for GIG.  The team worked alongside GIG to put in place a significant suite of contracts including the route to market agreement and construction documentation which can act as a model going forward.”
