Burges Salmon has been appointed to Crown Commercial Service’s (CCS) Rail Legal Services Panel, which provides rail specific legal advice to Central Government, their Arms Length Bodies, Public Buying Organisations, Great British Railways and the Department for Transport (DfT).

Crown Commercial Service supports the public sector to achieve maximum commercial value when procuring common goods and services. In 2020/21, CCS helped the public sector to achieve commercial benefits equal to £2.04bn - supporting world-class public services that offer best value for taxpayers.

Alongside seven other firms, Burges Salmon’s multidisciplinary team will provide expert legal advice to DfT as part of CCS's Rail Legal Panel over the next three years, providing support across core specialisms including regulatory law, rail commercial law, public procurement law and subsidy law.

Burges Salmon’s team of leading rail lawyers has a strong reputation for providing specialist advice on complex legal issues surrounding rail infrastructure. The team's experience, built up over the years since privatisation, covers all aspects of infrastructure and rail real estate, with expertise in subjects including construction of new railway infrastructure, new stations and depots, retail and passenger facilities, rail connected facilities, and the regeneration of land at and around railway stations.

The appointment continues the firm’s historic success on being appointed to central government panels. The firm has been advising central government for over 25 years. Burges Salmon also secured a Lot 1 place on the UK Government’s general advice roster in December last year.

The tender process involved a significant team comprising lawyers and business services individuals from across the firm.

Brioney Thomas, partner in the Projects team, comments: "We're very excited to be appointed by CCS on behalf of the DfT to be part of its prestigious panel. The rail sector in particular requires an in-depth understanding of multiple potential challenges and opportunities, which I am confident that our expert team can bring."
