Independent UK law firm Burges Salmon has been named as the Corporate Law Firm of the Year at the South West Dealmakers Awards 2022.

The awards bring together lawyers, accountants, bankers and financiers across the South West to celebrate the top dealmakers and deals over the past year, recognising the wealth of talent in the region.

Burges Salmon was successful in this category due to the quality of the deals it worked on over the course of the last year. Maintaining a healthy pipeline, the firm’s Corporate practice secured instructions in a number of high value and complex transactions and completed just under 100 deals last year with a combined value of £2.5bn – a significant increase on the previous 12 months.

Burges Salmon’s Corporate practice continues to advise new and existing clients on a range of deals, remaining one of the most active legal advisers in the South West. The team is known for its sector-specific expertise with notable deals over the qualifying period focusing on sectors such as Energy, Technology, Education, Transport and Financial Services.

The team remains extremely active in the energy sector, again being ranked highly in the latest Clean Energy Pipeline’s Legal League Table for clean energy M&A.

The team’s presence in the Technology sector has also gone from strength-to-strength. The launch of the firm’s innovative technology platform, BScale is enabling Burges Salmon to support fast-growth technology companies from start-up, to scale-up and through to exit.

Financial services M&A is another area of focus for the team, having built a strong reputation that has resulted in the team advising on some of the most high profile deals in the UK, including advising Nucleus Financial on takeover by James Hay, Mapfre Asistencia on its sale of InsureandGo to AllClear Travel Insurance and Embark on its sale to Lloyds Banking Group.

Nick Graves, Head of the Corporate group at Burges Salmon, says: “Being named as Corporate Law Firm of the Year reflects the hard work and expertise of everyone in our Corporate group. This accolade marks another good year for the firm, despite some challenges posed by the pandemic, and we are proud to have received such market recognition.”
