Karen is a senior associate in the firm's construction and engineering department, having joined the team on qualification in 2014. 

Karen has significant experience in disputes, dispute avoidance and contractor insolvency issues, as well as in advising on construction contracts and projects. She has particular experience in adjudication as well as arbitration, the Pre-Action Protocol for Construction and Engineering Disputes and enforcement proceedings in the Technology and Construction Court. 

Karen advises a broad range of clients including contractors, consultants, government departments, public and local authorities, employers, developers and funders.

  • Acting for a civil engineering contractor in successfully bringing adjudication proceedings against its subcontractor in a defects claim for around £1.3 million. The parties were involved in multiple adjudications on a number of highways infrastructure projects in the North of England and our team also successfully defended the related proceedings instigated by the same subcontractor. 
  • Defending arbitration proceedings commenced by a contractor against a police authority in an M&E design dispute worth around £5 million. 
  • Advising a local council on a dispute on one of its key infrastructure projects, which has included avoidance of formal dispute proceedings through negotiation and following the contract’s dispute resolution avoidance procedure.
  • Advising an international engineer specialising in emissions control in a multi-million pound dispute in relation to a FIDIC based contract for the conversion of oil burners to biomass burners at a power plant that is responsible for a significant proportion of the UK's energy supply. 
  • Acting for a charitable trust in the aviation industry in a dispute with its demolition contractor concerning the removal of asbestos in a Grade II listed building. 
  • Advising an engineering solutions contractor with issues arising with its design team and the authority on a £160 million highways project procured under an NEC3 form of contract.
  • Acting for a developer in multiple adjudication proceedings against a contractor in a £1.2 million defects claim in relation to an office development in Wales. 
  • Acting for a contractor in a multi-million pound dispute relating to a major off shore gas plant. This has involved advising our client on a matter of complex contractual interpretation in relation to a bespoke target cost form of contract, representing our client in negotiation meetings and, subsequently, successfully launching adjudication proceedings against the employer. 
  • Advising the developer of a shopping centre following the main contractor’s insolvency and assisting to implement a construction management procurement route to completion. 
  • Advising The Crown Estate on construction contracts across its development portfolio. 
  • Advising the Isle of Man Government in relation to two major contract variations to its multi-million pound Energy from Waste Facility on the Isle of Man. 
  • Advising AEG on construction of the new retail development at The o2, London, including drafting and negotiating a suite of bespoke professional consultant appointments and a building contract for the concourse development within The o2.
