Gary’s practice covers pensions work across schemes and employers in the private and public sectors. However, he is nationally recognised for his expertise in public sector pension matters and is viewed as one of the UK’s leading public sector pension lawyers.

He specialises in complex public sector pension issues across local government, central government, the NHS, the further and higher education sector, social housing and also provides advice to private sector contractors working for the public sector. His clients include Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) administering authorities, public sector employers, admission bodies and LGPS investment pools and well as private sector trustees and employers. Gary is highly ranked in both Chambers and Legal 500 legal directories, in particular for his public sector expertise.

Gary is qualified to practise law in England and Wales and is a member of the Association of Pension Lawyers Public Sector Sub-committee. Gary regularly contributes to consultation responses, webinars and seminars in the industry.

Experience

• LGPS asset pooling: Advising on the set up and ongoing operation of several of the LGPS investment pools and on recent plans to restructure the pools.
• Outsourcing: Advising Government Legal Department of the re-drafting of the Cabinet Office Model Contract pension provisions.
• Admission Agreements: Advising on the drafting and/or review of hundreds of LGPS admission agreements, bonds, guarantees and related issues.
• DB Pensions: Advising a private sector contractor on the set up and GAD certification of a new multi-section ‘broadly comparable’ pension scheme following a corporate transaction.
• Social Housing: Advising a housing association on its exit from SHPS and the set-up of a new replacement DB pension
• Education: Advising a university on the pension issues of large voluntary redundancy scheme.
